Which switch for which room? A room-by-room guide

Choosing a luxury switch starts with a simple question: what will you control, from where, and at what time of day? A hallway, a bedroom and an office do not have the same needs. Here is how to match each Empereur product family to its real use, room by room.

The switch families, in one sentence each

Before choosing for a room, it helps to know what each mechanism does. Here is the useful vocabulary, without jargon.

Two-way switch
controls one light from two places (both ends of a hallway, the bottom and top of a staircase, the door and the bed).
Push button
a brief impulse that drives a relay, a timer or a home automation system. It lets you control the same light from as many places as needed.
Lever
the same function as a push button, with the feel of a small lever: a more mechanical, more tactile signature.
Indicator light
a small light built into the control so you can find it in the dark.
Double
two controls on a single plate, when two lighting circuits meet at the same spot.
USB, RJ45, power sockets
everyday connections: charge, get on the network, plug in a device.
Cable outlet
a clean cable exit for a wall light or a device wired directly, with no visible socket.

Room by room

These pairings work most often. They do not replace your electrician's diagram, but they avoid unpleasant surprises when ordering.

Entrance
a single two-way switch or a double push button (welcome light and entrance light) at hand height, door side.
Hallway and staircase
two-way switches at both ends, or push buttons if the passage is long or has more than two accesses.
Living and dining room
a double or triple plate to separate ceiling light, wall lights and floor lamps, plus a power socket for accent lighting.
Kitchen
robust, easy-to-clean controls, and a USB socket to charge phones without using up a power socket.
Bedroom
a two-way switch between the door and the bed, an indicator light to find the control at night, USB sockets on the bedside.
Office
an RJ45 socket for a stable connection, USB sockets, and a light control within easy reach of the desk.
Cellar, garage, laundry
a push button with an indicator light, easy to find when walking into the dark.

And what about the metal?

Empereur switches are made of solid metal, hand-polished: stainless steel, brass, aluminium. The finish follows the interior: mirror-polished steel reflects the room and disappears, brushed brass warms a light wall, aged brass asserts itself on a dark one. Our article on finishes details the possible pairings.

Before ordering: three checks

Count your control points room by room, and note which ones are doubled (two accesses for one light). Then check whether you plan home automation: a push button is then simpler than a two-way switch. Finally, choose the plate before the mechanism details: a single, double or triple plate sets the space needed on the wall. Wiring is a job for a qualified electrician, who checks the circuit, the regulations and the compatibility with your installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a two-way switch and a push button?
A two-way switch controls a light from two places and changes state mechanically. A push button sends an impulse to a relay, a timer or a home automation system, which lets you add as many control points as you like.
Can I mix several types of controls on one plate?
Yes. Empereur double and triple plates take different mechanisms side by side (for example a two-way switch and a push button, or a socket and a switch).
Can Empereur switches be customised?
Yes. The configurator lets you choose the plate shape, the finish and the mechanism for each position.
